Egypt Launches ‘Greening Cairo’ Initiative to Revitalize Historical Downtown

The Egyptian government has officially announced the “Greening Cairo” project, a strategic urban development initiative designed to transform evacuated spaces across the capital into sustainable green zones.

Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly introduced the plan during a high-level meeting at the New Administrative Capital, emphasizing the state’s commitment to increasing per capita green space while elevating Cairo’s status as a premier global tourist destination.

This initiative is a critical component of a broader, government-led effort to restore Cairo’s historical and Islamic landmarks.

By upgrading infrastructure and rehabilitating the architectural heritage of districts such as “Khedivial Cairo,” officials aim to preserve the city’s unique cultural identity.

Projects like the newly inaugurated “Art Street” in the downtown district serve as a blueprint for the area’s future, where historical sites are being seamlessly integrated into a vibrant, pedestrian-friendly landscape of cultural and artistic activities.

To provide a comprehensive experience for visitors, the Ministry of Awqaf is spearheading the restoration of historical mosques and shrines, creating interconnected “tourist routes” that bridge the gap between ancient heritage and modern urban living.

Supported by the Cairo Governorate’s extensive rehabilitation works, the “Greening Cairo” initiative marks a significant step in the capital’s ongoing transformation into a modernized, sustainable, and heritage-rich hub for international tourism.
