1001 Secures $30M Series A to Power Sovereign AI for GCC Critical Infrastructure

1001, a GCC and London-based technology firm, has announced the successful closure of a $30 million Series A funding round led by Lux Capital.

The investment marks a significant milestone in the Middle East’s digital transformation, underscoring the growing conviction among top-tier US institutional investors in the region’s ability to develop advanced, sovereign artificial intelligence.

The round also saw participation from PIF-owned Sanabil Investments, 9Yards, and Hanabi, with follow-on commitments from General Catalyst, CIV, and Stanford AI researcher Chris Ré.

Founded in 2025 by CEO Bilal Abu-Ghazaleh, 1001 specializes in building sovereign AI operating systems designed for high-stakes critical infrastructure.

As the GCC region manages a substantial portion of global energy flows, aviation, and maritime logistics, the need for intelligent, locally-governed decision-making systems has become paramount.

1001’s platform integrates with existing operator systems to create a live, comprehensive model of assets and processes, enabling the identification of operational bottlenecks and the recommendation of high-precision actions in real-time.

The core value proposition of 1001 lies in its focus on sovereignty and control. By ensuring that AI systems are built, owned, and governed locally, the company empowers GCC institutions to maintain full authority over their essential operations—systems that are far too critical to be subject to external dependencies.

With the new capital, 1001 plans to aggressively scale its engineering team and expand its sales and marketing footprint across key GCC markets, bridging the gap between frontier AI technology and industrial application.

This strategic investment aligns with broader economic forecasts, including estimates from McKinsey suggesting that AI adoption could contribute up to $150 billion to GCC economies.

By providing the intelligence layer that runs the physical world—from energy grids to container ports—1001 is positioning itself as a foundational partner in the region’s quest to build autonomous, resilient, and locally-owned industrial capabilities.
