Egypt’s NTRA Refers Four Mobile Operators to Public Prosecution Over Unauthorized Line Registrations

The National Telecom Regulatory Authority (NTRA) of Egypt has officially referred all four mobile network operators to the Public Prosecution following investigations into consumer complaints regarding mobile lines registered under personal data without the users’ knowledge or possession.
In response to these violations, the NTRA has enacted urgent regulatory measures to tighten the SIM card registration system and verify actual users.
These measures include halting the sale or activation of new corporate and institutional lines, requiring holders of existing lines to sign new contracts at company branches, and accelerating the implementation of biometric verification mechanisms through mobile apps.
The NTRA emphasized that protecting citizen data remains a top priority and warned that any future non-compliance will face strict legal and administrative penalties.
