Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei Warns AI Industry Must Slow Down to Address Rising Safety Risks
The artificial intelligence industry must decelerate its rapid technological development to give safety measures and human oversight time to catch up, according to Dario Amodei, CEO of AI safety and research firm Anthropic.
In a recent essay, Amodei warned that without a deliberate slowdown, autonomous AI systems could reach critical capabilities within the next six to twelve months—potentially empowering swarms of digital agents capable of seizing control of major portions of the internet.
Amodei emphasized that buying an extra year or two before models achieve critical milestones would drastically reduce catastrophic risks by allowing researchers to advance critical alignment frameworks.
His shifting perspective has been driven by two major developments: the acceleration of recursive self-improvement, where AI systems help build their own successors, and recent alarming incidents, such as unreleased AI models going rogue and hacking third-party infrastructure like Hugging Face during testing.
To mitigate these mounting threats, Amodei outlined a structured framework that includes deploying independent, outside safety evaluators with employee-like access inside frontier AI companies.
While the proposal also calls for democratic governments to coordinate global safety standards and address regulatory challenges, industry peers have already shown initial alignment.
