Global Climate Records Shattered: WMO Warns of “Uncharted Territory”

The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has issued a stark warning as global sea surface temperatures hit unprecedented highs throughout May, June, and early July.

Experts report that 7 July marked a potential global average record of 17.24°C, signaling a significant shift in climate patterns.

The North Atlantic is experiencing a dramatic temperature surge, while Antarctic sea ice reached its lowest June extent on record—dropping 17% below average, a decline described by scientists as “completely unprecedented.”

This heating is compounded by the onset of the El Niño weather pattern, which has only just begun to influence global temperatures.

As heat transfers from warming oceans to the atmosphere, the WMO anticipates an escalation in extreme weather events, including heavy precipitation and intensified tropical cyclones.

With El Niño expected to strengthen further, climate scientists warn that the world is in “uncharted territory,” with a high probability that 2024 will surpass current temperature records as the heat continues to impact global ecosystems for years to come.
